Architecturally inspired systems for superior style and performance

This magnificently designed house sits in a forest clearing that overlooks both Obi Obi Valley and Kondalilla Falls, situated on the countryside behind the Sunshine Coast.

The house is encompassed by a dramatic bush setting, rolling hills and diverse climatic conditions. The significant surrounding topography was the driving force behind the distinctive design of this project. The plan was simple: to create a house that was basic yet modern and allowed the varying depths of bushland to form the backdrop of the homeowners’ daily life. Sparks Architects were used to design a home that fulfilled the brief to perfection and ensured the landscape was the focal point for every aspect of the project.

The deceptively small building is a practical response to the owners’ desire to live a simple, sustainable life whilst enjoying the virtues of an extremely beautiful setting. With the aim to ensure the picturesque location was taken full advantage of, Sparks Architects required a wide variety from Architectural Window Systems (AWS) range of aluminium windows and doors to ensure views of the landscape were maximised. The building required efficient materials as the location of the home is in a vulnerable position to the elements. Architects desired to utilise aluminium windows and doors for this project due to their durability and ability to withstand harsh hinterland weathering conditions.

Sparks preferred AWS systems for the project as they are capable of custom making aluminium windows and doors to suit the abstract design they had created. AWS was the perfect candidate for the project as they design a variety of both residential and commercial systems that are optimal in high-end architectural residential projects. The use of Vantage Series 525 LouvreMASTER™ adjustable windows throughout the house allows for a natural cross-ventilation all over. The Elevate™ Aluminium Systems Series 704 SlideMASTER™ Sliding Door was utilised in this project due to its ability to be custom made into panel sizes up to three metres high and two metres wide. This allowed architects the choice in sizing openings throughout the project.

Almost all AWS systems are able to be double glazed which architects took full advantage of. Double glazing windows and doors improves the insulation of the building envelope. This allows for less artificial temperature control, ensuring the house remains thermally efficient. In conjunction with double glazing, architects have strategically placed roof overhangs which regulate sun angles, almost diminishing the need for artificial temperature control despite the hot rural location. After the completion of the building, Sparks Architects praised AWS’s aluminium systems for their ability to suit various applications. Sparks are pleased that the aluminium windows and doors throughout the project have allowed for a sustainable home whilst ensuring maximum views and allowing protection against the elements.
