Architecturally inspired systems for superior style and performance

Vineyard House was a working vineyard for more than a decade. It was built on a 12ha property in Kangaroo Ground that was completely covered in vines before the project commenced.

With an unencumbered approach to architecture, Michael Sheppard designed along the contours of the land where he was inspired by the surrounding bushland. A fusion between the bushland and a practical design was implemented.

The main roof was inspired by the shape of a gum leaf and the interior design showcases how materiality from the former vineyard is continued throughout the new build. In the living area, there are statement light fittings which resemble a bunch of grapes. This was used to represent what was once a working vineyard.

The clients were excited about improved energy efficiency. Extensive double glazing was applied to the home through curved panels and windows with extended eaves added to those on the north side.

The owners had trepidations with the home being in an exposed location. The design of the home needed to withstand very high winds with the possibility of sub-cyclonic conditions. Because of this, Commercial framing Series 424 was chosen because it has a reinforced tall glazing bead at the sill to tolerate high wind loads. This product has been cyclone, BAL-40, AS2047 and acoustics certified and has a high water resistance of 600Pa.

Vineyard House was built with the intention of being the perfect retirement retreat with views of Kinglake National Park and Yarra Valley. Michael Sheppard worked with Makeview Windows & Doors to ensure that the home maximised all the views. From the main bedroom, a sliding door onto the deck and fixed glass were implemented to maximise the views. This home demonstrates how the environmental surroundings and history of an area can completely impact the design of a home.

What was once a working vineyard for more than a decade, it's now a perfect retirement retreat for its owners
