Architecturally inspired systems for superior style and performance

Student Correspondent: Designer Notes Review

DESIGNER-NOTES Hello again, This month we’re looking at (I’ve included us collectively because we’re in this together) Designer Notes, a series of short, snappy and smart videos produced by AWS from architects who have used AWS products to achieve specific results in their built designs.

Personally, I just jumped for joy - I’ve been looking forward to talking about these ever since I first watched the first earlier this year. They are nothing short of wonderful. If you are looking for a way to understand how architects work and more importantly what AWS is about, these videos are your answer.

These videos are helpful because they take you through the designers way of breaking down design problems such as dealing with Australia’s climate (hot summers, cold winters), views which are often ones to be exploited and maximised with large windows, seamless transition through interior spaces to exterior spaces and ways of using the sun and providing shade to homes to naturally heat and cool the space. It’s interesting to follow the process designers go through to resolve these issues. It’s also inspiring to see (visually, in the video itself) the way that the details express the important values and aims of the design. I also really appreciate the way that these videos not only highlight the way that AWS products allow architects to achieve a built reality that is a direct translation of the design intent, but it also showcases thoughtfulness and cleverness of architects of our time, and I do really enjoy that. A personal favourite of mine is the Bluff House, but in perfect honesty, they are all really engaging, well put together and pithy. I’d highly recommend them to you.

Until next time,

Your faithful S.C. Rebekah.
