Emerging Architect Prize

The Emerging Architect Prize recognises an emerging architect who has made a considerable contribution to architectural practice, education, design excellence and community involvement, thus advancing the impact and significance of the profession within the public arena.

As designers of high-performance aluminium window and door systems, AWS is passionate about excellent design from product, all the way through to project completion.

A large part of AWS supporting the profession is our long-running sponsorship of the Emerging Architect Prize.

The calibre of entries received each year encourages our optimism about the direction of this profession. We are honoured to be able to sponsor the future of the profession through the Emerging Architect Prize, alongside the support of the Australian Institute of Architects and EmAGN.

ACT Prize Winner - Will Gardner

Will Gardner is an architect who has achieved a remarkable amount in the years since graduating from the University of Canberra.  Through a pursuit of the highest quality outcomes, strong collaboration and intelligent design, Will has delivered projects locally, nationally and internationally.  His work has been awarded and published, and he has used the opportunity to display leadership and advocacy for the sensitive restoration of buildings that hold a place in Canberra’s cultural history.

Will was made associate at Guida Moseley Brown Architects in 2016, and is heavily involved in the industry through his participation within the Australian Institute of Architects and the University of Canberra.   He dedicates time to speaking at schools and universities, while also teaching and tutoring indigenous students in the UC Ngunnawal Centre.  As part of his involvement with the Emerging Architects and Graduates Network (EmAGN), Will was instrumental in unifying the previously independent state EmAGN groups into the formally recognised AIA National  EmAGN committee.

 

NSW Prize Winner - Cameron Anderson

Cameron Anderson established Cameron Anderson Architects in 2011 in the regional town of Mudgee NSW after having worked for a number of years at Hayball in Melbourne and Bates Smart in Sydney. Since graduation from the University of Tasmania in 2005, Cameron has demonstrated excellence in all areas of practice, research and education. He has been extremely active and involved in the NSW Country Division Committee of the Australian Institute of Architects, being the current cChair of the cCommittee, and has demonstrated exceptional leadership within the profession in supporting and delivering a high level and quality of professional services within regional areas of NSW.

Cameron has been instrumental in leading a number of key initiatives for the Institute in a regional context and has also been the recipient of six Institute awards in residential, commercial and heritage work, including the James Barnet Award in 2015 for his High Cube Café project in Mudgee. Cameron has been active in promoting the Institute initiatives and profile of architects practicing regionally through both mainstream and professional media. We also recognise his generosity in contributing his professional time and services to public art panels, prizes and improving local public programs and facilities.

 

QLD Prize Winner - Emma Healy 

Emma has shown an enormous commitment to both the architectural profession and also the wider community.

Her capacity as a design architect is outstanding, but she has also demonstrated a rare and immense commitment to the role that architectural leadership and involvement can play in much broader community and social conversations.  

Emma is a fantastic advocate within the architectural community as well as the community more broadly, proven by her work to promote flexible roles within small and medium practices, support for female leaders within the profession and engagement with multiple community groups including Architects Without Frontiers, AUSAID, Australian Youth Ambassadors and the Cakaudrove Women's Resource Centre in Fiji. As a member of the Queensland Australian Institute of Architects Gender Equity Committee and past juror for the Australian Institute of Architects Interior Design Awards Emma has shown her dedication to improving and supporting the profession on multiple fronts.

 

VIC Prize Winner - Rodney Eggleston 

Rodney's passion for architecture and all that it encompasses is infectious. Having graduated from RMIT University in 2005, Rodney founded March Studio in 2007 with graphic designer Anne-Laure Cavigneaux.

The practice has never shied away from opportunities and it is with an experimental and inquisitive can-do attitude that the practice has flourished. Working across local and international contexts in retail, residential, cultural, hospitality and furniture design, the practice is synonymous with a desire to experiment with the elements of making. Understanding the inherent constraints within the construction industry, the practice has set about establishing an office workshop to test proposed 1:1 details. 

March Studio have been awarded numerous state, national and international awards in recognition of their consistent approach to design and built outcomes. Rodney has served on state and national awards juries, is regularly invited to speak at forums and contributes to the teaching program at RMIT University. 

 

WA Prize Winner - Kukame McPierzie

Graduating from the University of Western Australian in 2009 with two prestigious awards (the EG Cohen Medal and the Gus Ferguson Travel Scholarship) Kukame immediately began contributing to the profession through initiating public lectures and exhibitions as an outcome of these student accolades. 

Kukame’s capacity is acknowledged through his senior appointments in highly regarded and established practices where his role in civic scale projects has been instrumental in the design and delivery of ‘city changing’ schemes.  His stewardship across scales and typologies is commendable and his cross disciplinary approaches are embedded in industry and community partnerships.

Emerging Architects Prize Chapter winners receive the following prizes: 

• $1,000AUD Cash Prize

• One ticket to attend the National Architecture Conference (including return airfares and accommodation for up to two nights)

• One ticket to attend the National Architecture Awards  (including return airfares and accommodation for one night)

• One ticket to attend their local Chapter Architecture Awards presentation event 

The Chapter Juries select one winner per Chapter, who is then elevated to the National Jury. 

The National Emerging Architect Prize Winner receives: 

• $2,000AUD Cash Prize 

• The opportunity to participate in an AWS Perspective video
