Architecturally inspired systems for superior style and performance

Welcome to the AWS Student Correspondent!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA AWS have invited a student architect to be involved with a project representing AWS at the upcoming NEXUS Student Architecture Congress. The AWS student architect will be providing content for distribution by AWS in the lead up to the event. Our Student Correspondent will be a on the ground representative of AWS viewing the conference from the perspective of a student participant and providing an alternate view of the event for the AWS team! Prior to the event, our Student Correspondent will be commenting on various aspects of AWS systems and resources.

We’d like to introduce Rebekah as our 2013 Student Correspondent.

Hi! I’m Rebekah Lamb. I’m a plains-dwelling, coffee-making, shower-singing, craft-loving... student. I am currently undertaking a Bachelor of Design in Architecture at UTS.

Even though I’m not so set on defining myself by what I study, I guess it does say a lot about what I’m interested in. That is; Architecture of course, but specifically the thing I love about architecture is when space is created and articulated interestingly, uniquely and well. I could go on to say that I appreciate the way that no space is the same, every different space has a different context, a different story as to how and why it came to be the way it is. But that’s not crux of it for me, these things are all really good things, but architecture has a richness that presents a certain complexity. So I love the back-story, but I love that the future story of how the space is going to be used is left undefined to some extent. There's this mix of the architectural intentions of a space and what the user of the space brings to it that defines where that space is going in the future. And that's why I like it so much. I’m studying architecture because I love coming to understand this rich back-story of built form; the design process, the design intent, the context of a buildings' realisation, it’s purpose and function but, I also want to be in on that; I want to participate and do those things for myself; in essence I want to create and play with articulating space for myself.

So, I'm excited to be a part of the NEXUS Student Correspondent Program for a few reasons; I'm looking forward to expanding my sphere of influence which up until now has just been the school of architecture at university. I really think that being in such close contact with AWS will give me a taste of different ways of thinking, fresh resources and just experiencing, testing or trying things that I wouldn't necessarily do on my own accord. I'm just excited to learn and think about some new things that aren't my own university assignments!
