It’s an amazing thing to be in because it gets so much natural lighting

Michael Paddison

Owner/Builder

Featuring a luxurious bar, parents’ retreat, alfresco dining area, and gorgeous exterior landscaping, the plans for Paddison House in Orange, NSW, ticked every box when it came to entertaining and comfortable living. The only thing left to tackle was the area’s notoriously cold winters.

To attract as much warm sunshine into the home as possible, builder/owner, Michael Paddison, oriented most of the house to the north and made windows a key focus of his design.

During the initial planning stages, Michael consulted the team at Taberners Windows, part of the AWS fabricator network, and says he was “absolutely blown away” with the service he received. “This is the first time we’ve used AWS [products]. The thing I like about it is the finished quality product. Everything just works easy for us!”

The home features a long, main corridor which might have appeared dark and unwelcoming were it not for the use of a series of large windows and doors that look out over a beautifully landscaped garden. “It’s an amazing thing to be in because it gets so much natural lighting,” says Michael.

Michael also loves the wow factor of the home’s main, interior statement piece; a stunning raised roof section in one of the central living areas. The drawback was that it created a hot-air pocket that threatened the home’s energy efficiency during the height of the summer months. The solution? Automatic opening windows that, when open, release the hot-air pocket and reduce interior temperatures without the need for constant (and expensive) air conditioning.
