2018 Australian Institute of Architects National Emerging Architect Prize Winner

The Emerging Architect Prize acknowledges and encourages the potential of emerging architects by recognising their efforts through an annual prize. The prize is not just limited to architectural practice, other factors considered include excellence in architectural research, community activities and the promotion of architecture in general. 

At the Australian Institute of Architects National Architecture Conference, Edge, the winner of the National Emerging Architect Prize was announced. Congratulations to Christina Cho of Cox Architecture. 

For someone who graduated only a decade ago, the list of Christina Cho’s professional accomplishments is long. Showing an interest in extra-curricular activities early on in her career, Christina was state chair of Young Architects Queensland (now EmAGN QLD) from 2008 to 2010. Presently she sits on the committee for FutureNet, an initiative for young professionals working in the built environment, where she promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Demonstrating her belief that contributions outside of the architecture profession are important, Christina was one of the driving forces that brought PechaKucha to Brisbane, an event which is significant to local creatives of all disciplines, which has now been running for 10 years. Within the profession, Christina has established a mentoring program at Cox Architecture, contributes to architectural education through guest university lectures and has sat on previous Brisbane Regional Architecture Awards juries.

Each year, AWS awards the National Prize Winner the opportunity to create a video titled, “Perspectives”. An opportunity for the Prize Winner to showcase themselves to peers and clients alike. Christina is a third generation architect and her “Perspective” is titled Crossroads. “My Korean Australian heritage has significantly shaped the way I practice architecture.”
